Lime plaster workshop

Lime plaster

Overview

Lime plaster workshop

Based on our survey, the most requested 5-day hands-on training to learn how to make, apply and finish lime plaster is coming.

Lime plaster workshop is suitable for people who have no previous experience with lime plaster as well as people who already have some experience and wish to receive further training.

We will work on specially prepared sample boards, stands and wall surfaces. Participants are free to take the results of their experimentations with the materials with them. Any materials necessary for further independent experimentation can be purchased at a discount price set for the participants of the workshop.

Lümanda Lime Park & UKU Pure Earth support the lime plaster workshop with materials.

Lime plaster workshop topics

Lime, aggregates and natural fibers

Lime (CaOH2) is the second oldest binder after clay, which mankind has used in various construction and finishing mixtures. We will talk about how lime is produced, what are air lime, hydraulic lime and hydraulic additives.

To obtain construction and finishing materials, in addition to the binder, we also need fillers, which can be various sands, gravels, mineral light fillers, and suitable crushed old construction and finishing materials can also be reused.

In addition to mineral fillers, natural fibers can also be used in suitable places to improve the technical or physical properties of materials and to save the use of non-renewable natural resources.

We will talk about everything in more detail during the lime plaster workshop.

Stone buildings

We will talk about the expediency of restoring stone buildings and walls, factors that damage them, moisture and salts, damage detection, technical condition assessment, repair, conservation and stone wall insulation.

We will take a thorough tour of Eestimaaehitus’ stone building and learn about various insulation and finishing solutions.

In the practical part, we familiarize ourselves with the necessary tools, prepare our own mixtures and see what ready-made mixtures are available on the market, learn how to clean a natural stone wall and fill joints, and prepare it for lime plaster work.

Lime plaster

Lime plaster is suitable for finishing both modern and historical facades, but it is also perfect for interiors, including wet rooms, and for surfaces in direct contact with water using special mixtures and techniques.

Lime plaster protects structures from fire, is open to water vapor diffusion, helps to balance the relative humidity of the rooms and, due to its high pH level, inhibits the growth of molds and bacteria.

During the workshop, we will introduce the properties of lime plaster and lime plaster systems for different substrates.

In the practical part, we learn about the preparatory work and the necessary tools, we prepare our own mixtures and see what ready-made mixtures are available on the market, we learn how to install and reinforce lime plaster and finish with fine finish lime plasters.

Lime plaster application

In the practical part of lime plaster workshop we:

  • talk about occupational safety when working with lime;
  • familiarize ourselves with the preparatory work and the necessary tools;
  • prepare our own mixtures and see which ready-made mixtures are commercially available;
  • learn how to install and reinforce lime plaster;
  • learn how to follow the relief of the base surface when plastering and how to achieve a straight surface.

We work on specially prepared sample boards, stands and wall surfaces in a warm room with all the necessary tools and materials.

Finishing lime plaster

Lovers of a stronger plaster texture can also leave the base plaster as the final finishing surface or cover it with lime or another natural paint. We will take a look at examples and talk about these possibilities in more detail during the lime plaster workshop.

In the practical part of finishing, we will focus on the application of lime fine finishing plaster. For this purpose, we use special stands on which you can also practice finishing the inner and outer corners.

Different tools and techniques allow the same material to achieve very different textured final surfaces.

Lime fine finishing plaster can be tinted, enriched with decorative natural additives, painted or covered with even finer lime finishing and gloss putties.

Evening programs

Lecture and tour of Eestimaaehitus building

Our center is located in Mooste manor complex, in an old stable and carriage house, built in 19th century. It is a heritage building and a cultural monument.

Preparations for renovation project started in 2016, construction work started in 2018 and in 2020, we opened here a Training, Product Development and Competence Center for Ecological Building.

We will talk about the renovation process of our building and show the different solutions used, and introduce what our organization and its members are doing, and what opportunities the center offers.

We will take you on a tour of our competence center building, where you can see plenty smaller and full-scale natural building and finishing techniques and solutions.

Walk in nature

The forest has historically fed and offered shelter to Estonians, whose roots are deeply embedded in the nature’s soil. While many Estonians today lead a busy suburban lifestyle, they continue to seek the forest as a place to rest and reinvigorate the body and the mind. Forest is recognized as a recurring theme in Estonian folklore, inspiring storytellers and painters that have produced beautiful landscapes. No doubt, the course week will be intensive and flooded with lots of information, so let´s treat our bodies and minds with a nice walk in nature.

The most pristine and untouched beauty of Estonian nature is hidden in bog landscapes, which are scarce in the rest of Europe. Valgesoo is the smallest but the most fascinating bog in Põlva County; it conceals tiny bog islands, colonies of ants and hiding places of animals.

The two Taevaskoda outcrops on the banks of the ancient valley of the Ahja River are one of the most frequently visited sites in southern Estonia.

Tour of Mooste manor complex

Eduard von Nolcken made Mooste’s manor complex one of the most charming of its kind in Southern-Estonia. It is also one of the newer manor complexes in Estonia.

The manor’s heimat-style main building was built in 1909 following the project by August Reinberg. The two-story building has a slate roofing and plenty of cornices and dormers, as well as many other characteristically complicated and decorative details.

What makes Mooste manor special in addition to the stately main building, is the grand complex of well-preserved outbuildings. They are mainly built from granite with brick embellishments. The spacious complex is surrounded by a beautiful granite wall, which has sumptuous gates and is crowned with a bell-tower on one of its corners. The outbuildings are also eye-catching and gorgeously decorated.

Scandinavian bright and green interior, forest-scented steam and iridescence of nature sounds, provide the best relaxation. In the spa, you can enjoy a sauna with Saunum heater, a steam bath, a jacuzzi bath and boost your health in the salt chamber.

To get the best experience, it is possible to order various massages and body treatments before or after the sauna.
